Letter from the Editor

ear Reader,

Welcome to the New World.

In the Old World, California was the place to make movies and TV. The depth of talent and technical support, the wealth of production sound stages and post-production facilities, the variety of locations, the stunning climate - it made sense to shoot and post film and television here.

In the New World, a variety of financial incentives and technical advances have made shooting outside of California an alternative.

But, it is our firm belief that shooting elsewhere is not the best alternative. We feel strongly that shooting and posting in California still has untold advantages. This remains the place with the greatest depth of talent, technical expertise, and location possibilities in the world.

Our magazine was founded to highlight the positive aspects of shooting here. By highlighting and informing the film community of California's golden potential, we aim to keep work in California, and to bring the maximum amount of work back to California that has migrated elsewhere.

  • To that end, we keep our readers up to date with the latest technical advances.
  • We offer a website (bookmark us now!) that is your own personal rolodex for finding the best in personnel, services, and equipment.
  • We introduce you to film and television talent who describe the obstacles in creating this great medium, and how they overcame each obstacle.
  • We interview industry workers who explain how they capitalize on this great state to bring quality to their lives, working in proximity to their family and friends. It's important to know where to find the best mix facility for the price, but it's also important to discover the best take-out place near Fox at midnight and the nicest day care alternative in Glendale.
  • Further, we recognize that there is a traditional media machine that exists alongside a younger, upstart beast.

The Main Pages of our magazine address the traditional methods of film and television production and post. You will read about people with the resources to order up the best in equipment and time on a project.

The Flip Side of our magazine introduces you to the new and exciting possibilities that low-cost digital technology is bringing to the film and television world. A world in which an entire independent film's budget might be the size of a day's catering costs for a studio feature.

Live California, Love California, Film California.

It's more than a job, it's a way of life.
