It used to be Canada that bore the brunt of Hollywood's indignation over its use of allegedly unfair subsidies to foster its film industry at the expense of Los Angeles.
Generous tax credits, introduced in the early 1990s, helped Canada draw low-budget television film-makers from high-cost LA, and the country now boasts a full-service movie-making base for all comers. Vancouver alone claims that film contributes about $1bn a year to British Columbia's economy. In May, local officials said that with 30 productions under way, the province was “at capacity”.
